The credit institutions operating in our country are required to collect and maintain customer identification details, including tax/financial information and other details (residence, contact, and professional activity). They must also verify these details from reliable sources. These institutions are obligated to verify and update this information at regular intervals.
What use is made of the information I provide and the personal data it may contain:
According to Law 4624/2019, Law 2472/1997 as amended, and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) [Regulation (EU) 2016/679], the information you provide to the banks you cooperate with:
- Is collected and stored securely for the period required by the applicable legislation.
- Is used exclusively for the purpose for which it was collected, and
- Any violation of this legislation by the banks will result in severe penalties and strict fines.
Why is it mandatory to provide information to the bank?
According to applicable laws both in the European Union and internationally, Law 4557/2018 and the relevant decision of the Bank of Greece’s Banking and Credit Committee 281/5/17.3.2009, as amended, the regulatory framework concerning the prevention of the use of the financial system for the legitimization of proceeds from criminal activities and the financing of terrorism was revised in Greece.
This framework aims to:
- Ensure the integrity of the banking system, and
- Protect the legal interests of each participant and secure their financial transactions.
In implementation of this regulatory framework, banks are required not to carry out any transaction unless they have previously verified and authenticated the identity of the individual involved. They are also obliged to request from their customers documents such as legalization papers (for legal entities, their legal representatives, and beneficial owners), identity verification documents (for individuals), income tax clearance certificates and/or income tax returns, transaction documents, etc., and to keep these records.
For this reason, when the bank requests information for a transaction, or for the initiation or continuation of your banking relationship, you should be aware that it is complying with the provisions of the applicable legislation and cannot act otherwise.
What exact information will be requested from me and how will I authenticate it?
The documents that can be used to authenticate the information required by Law 4557/2018 and the decision of the Banking and Credit Committee (ETPΘ) 281/5/17-3-2009 of the Bank of Greece, as amended, are described in detail in the brochure of the Hellenic Bank Association titled “Have you introduced yourself? If not, do it now.”
